Timeless and Modern with a Dabble of art Deco
Claremont
On a weekly basis, a group of neighbors pop around from house to house for cocktails; the desire for a signature bar became apparent early on. The owners talked about an Art Deco style bar with brass accents. What we came up with is an Art Deco-inspired bar with lacquered black cabinets, figured maple inlay just under the countertop, and maple and walnut accents that become the handles on the doors behind the bar. Brass bar foot rail and brass and glass café shelving to finish off this Art Deco look.
The previous fireplace did not match the modernness of the house nor the owner’s lifestyle as it had a very dated feel to it. The fireplace insert was replaced with a more contemporary one and was also lowered. The floating hearth and asymmetrical surround of the same stone as the hearth giving it a contemporary look and focal point for the living room. A bump out in the wall gave the opportunity for the recessed walnut shelves. The Venetian Plaster wall surrounding the granite fireplace accents the new polished concrete floor, coupled with the walnut paneling on the low kitchen wall adds a sophisticated warmth tying the two spaces together.
The previous owners had put in the plumbing for a small powder room off the entry, the request was for a ‘funky’ powder room, something special for the small space. To that end, there is a custom print that runs up the back wall and onto the ceiling, a partial round lighted mirror, and a floating walnut counter holding a stainless steel vessel bowl.
The stairs leading to the second floor were inspired by a set of floating teak stairs the owners saw on a cruise, to get the floating feel for the stairs the riser was set at a sharp angle. Made of solid walnut and inlaid brass accents the stairs reference the kitchen peninsula, living room shelves, and inlay in the kitchen floor.
